Travel way back to 1565: Fuerza de San Pedro

“Travelling helps you learn new things through experience” -Anonymous

Have you ever experienced time travelling? Do you believe that we, humans aren’t capable of time travelling? Well, this isn’t entirely true because we can go back in time and take a peek of the past just by reading history and seeing priceless artifacts from the past. You can do travelling and time travelling all at once by simply visiting places like ruins and museums. Surely, what you’ll learn from it is worth the travel.

By the entance of the fort

Fuerza de San Pedro or most commonly called Fort San Pedro is a historical landmark and popular tourist attraction located at Plaza Independencia, in the Pier Area of Cebu City. But what made this old fort so significant from the others? How did it become an attractive tourist spot from a very old military defense? What made it alluring in the eyes of different tourists? Why was the old fort restored and made into what it is today? These are the questions that I’ve been asking myself when I heard about Fort San Pedro.

At first, I didn’t know what Fort San Pedro was until my roommates told me about it. One Sunday morning in the month of June, after we attended the 9:00 mass at Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, we decided to go to Fort San Pedro since it was just a 10-minute walk from Sto. Niño church. I wasn’t really interested in historical stuff since I find it boring. But I still went with them. There was an entrance fee of P30.00 for adults, P25.00 for senior citizens and P20.00 for students and children.

I was a little fascinated when we entered Fort San Pedro. I thought it was just an ordinary fort or something because the outside was just an old building made out of stone or maybe clay but it was more than that. A beautiful courtyard greeted us upon entering the said place. It was full of healthy and green trees and other plants. We took lots of pictures and wandered around the place. We found a museum inside and I was surprised since I became interested to read about the history of the place. There were lots paintings and historical artifacts which depicted pieces of it’s history. I felt like I was travelling back when Fort San Pedro was built, 1565. It was like a time travel experience but without the use of a time machine or tearing the space-time continuum. The day went by just like that, we were taking pictures, talking and laughing together. It was really memorable for me since it was my first bonding time with my roommates.

Here are the pictures that I have taken with my roommates 🙂

When our professor told us to make a travel blog, I though maybe going to Taoist temple, Temple of Leah or Tops would be a good idea but for some reason, I remembered Fort San Pedro. So I thought, why not make a travel piece about it?

With that, I went to Fort San Pedro again but this time with two of my classmates since I need to take some pictures of some places which I wasn’t able take pictures of the last time I went there. We were wandering around, taking pictures of certain things and learning new stuff at the same time since we were also reading the writings that were posted on walls and on other places. At that time, there were so may tourists, both local and international. Mostly were from asian countries like China and Korea 😀 They look like they were having fun. They were taking pictures and learning about the fort’s history as well as Cebu’s history. They seem really interested in knowing more about the place and I find it good to know that other people from different countries are interested to learn about our culture and history 😊

I was still having fun and learning new things through exploring even though it’s already my second time there. I still felt like I was time travelling.

A peek into the past: Fort San Pedro’s History

20160311_151211

Fuerza de San Pedro is a military defence structure built by the Spanish under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi, first governor of the Captaincy General of the Philippines. It got it’s name from Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s flagship “San Pedro” in which he sailed the Pacific Ocean. They started the building of Fort San Pedro on May 8, 1565 eleven days after their arrival in Cebu with Legazpi himself breaking the ground.

The original fort was made of wood and built after the arrival of Legazpi and his expedition.

In the early 17th century it was made into a stone fort to repel Muslim raiders.

It is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. During the Philippine Revolution at the end of the 19th century, it was attacked and taken by Filipino revolutionaries, who used it as a stronghold.

Little was known about the activity of the fort from the time it was built until two centuries later in 1739 when the King of Spain, Philip V, desired information regarding the island of Cebu. Governor-general Tamón, who was the Spanish ruler of the islands at the time made the following report:

“Fuerte San Pedro, the fort is described as built of stone mortar with a terreplein where guns are mounted. The fort contains the necessary buildings. The largest of these buildings was the Cuerpo de Guardia where the personnel that manned the fort lived. Adjacent to it was the viviendadel teniente which was the living quarters of the lieutenant of the fort. In between the aforementioned buildings is a well. At one corner attached to the walls of the bastión San Miguel (NE) was the Almacenes de Pólvora (powder magazine)”

Believe it or not, Fort San Pedro has been transformed and has served many functions. It became a part of the American Warwick Barracks, converted into school rooms, a Japanese refuge during the World War II, served as an emergency hospital for the wounded, an army camp, became a miniature garden, turned into a zoo then restored back to it’s original form and was turned over to the City Government from Philippine Tourism Authority on February 1, 2008. I was really amazed of the multi-functional purposes this fort can do. 😃
In the present, it serves as a popular tourist attraction, museum, a venue for photoshoots and other related purposes.

Here are some picrures that I took inside the museum 🙂

What else is in Fort San Pedro?

You can find an image of the Nuestra Señora de la Cotta a.k.a Our Lady of the Fort, the Virgen of Remedies near a wishing well which is called as Pozo dela Virgen.

According to the book by Lutgarda Aviado, entitled “Madonnas of the Philippines,” the original image of Nuestra Senora dela Cotta of Cebu, also known as ‘Birhen sa Cota sa Sugbo,’ was found floating inside a well located in Fort San Pedro, around the years 1572-1575. The image is made in the European style (de tallado or Istilo de Europa), details and clothes entirely carved. The venerated image was enshrined in Cota San Pedro. It gained many devotees. The waters from the well were also said to have miraculous powers. Because of healings attributed to Our Lady and the waters, she was given the name Nuestra Senora delos Remedios or ‘Mahal na Birhen ng mga lunas’.

According to some stories, the remaining bones of the American and Japanese soldiers were thrown in the well. There had been some suspicious incidents like faucets turning on and off, computers being weird and reports of ghosts seen in the pictures of tourists. Every year during the founding anniversary of the fort on May 8, there would be a mass and blessing of the fort to keep evil spirits away but they would always come back. A priest suggested that they would transfer the bones to a cementery with proper burial rites and all the mysterious incidents stopped. Was that the end of the hauntings in Fort San Pedro? Well, believe it or not, while I was taking a picture of the well, I saw an orb. An orb is said to be some form of a spirit that’s still wandering around in our world. Is it possible that there are still some spirits remaining and lurking around the fort? Maybe.. 😮👻😶😕

But despite these stories, Fort San Pedro is a great place to visit if you want to relax and experience time travelling. It is also a great place for photoshoots and other things. Plus, it’s just inside the city so there are lots of fast food chains around and transportaion is readily available 👍👌👏😏😆😉😄😁

I hope this travel piece of mine made you satisfied and interested to travel to places like Fort San Pedro 😁😀

Useful Tips For Conquering College Life Stress

Being a college student can be fun and exciting. It can also be a privilege and a responsibility. Being in college is no joke. You have to be responsible and determined if you want to pass all your subjects and graduate with flying colors.

Collge life isn’t easy. I know because I am a college student as well. No one is immune to stress. Have you ever experienced times in your college life where it can be really stressful and frustrating to the point that you want to give up already? Well, you’re not the only one because most college students feel the same. But don’t get affected by it too much for it will only hinder your performance in school.

Being stressed is just a normal experience. Yes, it is often unavoidable and can occur at anytime and any place but it is also something that You can control and conquer. You’re probably going to ask, “How can I control and conquer it?” Well, you came to the right blog since I’m going to ennumerate some of my own tips and suggestions on how you can deal with stress in college life, based on my reaserches and own experiences.

TIPS FOR CONQUERING COLLEGE LIFE STRESS:

1. Get enough shut eye.

Sleeping means replenishing the body. Based on my learnings from our psychology class, when you sleep, your body replenishes itself therefore getting rid of bad and dead cells and replacing them with new ones and building up or enhancing the various systems in our body. The body releases growth hormones when you sleep.
Your body restores itself while you sleep that’s why if you get the right amount of rest your body needs, you’ll feel as good as new when you wake up. Getting enough rest can help boost your brain power. It helps in the development of the brain and other parts of the body. For example, a baby sleeps almost all of the time. Why? Because the baby’s body isn’t fully developed yet. The baby needs to get all the rest he/she can get in order for his/her body to be fully developed. Hence, sleeping is essential for the growth and development of the body.

Insufficient sleep can cause illnesses and sleep disorders like insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy and many more. It can hinder the memory processing of the brain, can cause mental blocks and can make you forget what you’ve learned or experienced easily. Sleep deprivation can lead to poor performance of the brain thus giving you bad grades.

You need to sleep atleast 8 hours or more during the night. If you slept in less than 8 hours, try to get back your lacking hours of sleep by taking power naps for atleast 20-45 minutes during the day.

2. Time is gold. Manage your time wisely.

Time is important for college students. Within the first few days of starting college, many students quickly learn that managing their time is one of the most challenging — and difficult — aspects of being in school. With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make all the difference.

Here are some tips:

  • Get and use a calendar.
  • Write down everything.
  • Schedule time to relax.
  • Keep trying new systems.
  • Allow for flexibility.
  • Plan ahead.
  • Plan for the unexpected.
  • Schedule rewards in.

3. Eat healthy foods.

As the quote says, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Earing healthy foods has a huge impact on our bodies and lives. There are so many benefits that eating the right food can give us. Food nourishes our bodies and eating healthy foods keep us away from bad diseases. One specific benefit of eating healthy foods is that is can help in reducing stress.

Here are 12 superfoods that can help reduce and relieve stress:

  • Green Leafy Vegetables
  • Turkey breast
  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Salmon
  • Blueberry
  • Pistachios
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Milk

4. Drink lots of water.

Water is an essential part of our diet. It keeps our body going and able to do lots of things. Without water, we would be nothing. We need water to keep ourselves hydrated and for the different parts of our bodies to function. Water is essential in relieving stress.
You need to drink atleast 8 glasses of water a day. If you feel stressed while studying, try taking a short break and have time to drink a glass of water. It will replenish you and give you energy to continue studying.

5. Avoid smoking, using illegal drugs, drinking alcoholic drinks, too much caffeine and too much energy drinks.

Smoking, using illegal drugs and drinking alcohol DOES NOT help in relieving stress. It will only make it worse. Plus, it will eventually lead to other diseases and health problems.
Caffeine is good. But drinking too much caffeine is not good for coping up with stress since it will increase your anxiety (depending on the type of caffeine or person). It can also cause insomnia and restlessness.
Drinking too much energy drinks will help you stay awake during the night but will surely cause an energy crash resulting to a greater chance of being more stressed.
So it is unadvisable to smoke, use drugs, drink alcohol, drink too much caffeine and energy drinks if you want to conquer stress.

6. Have fun. Find your stress reliever.

In order not to be stressed out, you should take time to relax, enjoy and have fun. When you have nothing to do and you’ve just finished a stressful school week, why not go out with youe friends or just by yourself and enjoy strolling anywhere? You should spend your free time on doing the things thay you like to do to keep yourself relaxed.
You should determine your stress relievers. Your stress-reliever could be something that you like to eat a lot like chocolates, candies, etc; Something that you’re interested in like (for example) KPOP, I am interested in KPOP so, watching KPOP mvs, variety shows and listening to KPOP music is my stress-reliever; and something that you like to do the most like reading, singing, dancing, listening to music, writing, drawing, shopping, etc.

7. Exercise.

You may think that if you don’t have the time to sleep and eat properly, you definitely don’t have the time to exercise. Fair enough, but if you’re feeling stressed, it may be that you need to squeeze it in somehow. Exercise doesn’t necessarily have to involve a 2-hour, exhausting workout at the campus gym. It can mean a relaxing, 30-minute walk while listening to your favorite music. In fact, in a little over an hour, you can:

1) Walk 15 minutes to your favorite off-campus restaurant

2) Eat a quick and healthy meal

3) Walk back, and

4) Take a power nap

8. Be positive. Surround yourself with positive people.

Life is like a teacup. There’s only so much “stuff” that will fit into it. If you fill your cup with the wrong things and the wrong people, you won’t have time for the right things and right people. The wrong things and people bring stress. The right people and things bring joy and contentment. Choose who and what gets your time and attention.

9. Relax yourself.

What do you do to really relax? Do you even take the time, or know how to? Meditation, listening to soothing music, spending time with friends and people you love, conscious breathing… these are all ways to really relax. If your mind is pulled to the things that stress you, you aren’t really relaxed! Take time to be absolutely quiet every day.

10. Be determined.

Set a goal. Be determined to reach your goal. Never give up even in the most stressful times. If you can’t beat stress then just enjoy it and think of it as a challenge that will help shape you and prepare you for the upcoming events or more challenges in the future. Never let a bad experience bring you down. Always keep in mind that you can always do better next time. Motivate yourself. Always tell yourself that you can do it and there’s no backing out anymore. Trust yourself and never loose your fighting spirit!

Simple hair care health tips

Do you believe in the saying, “The hair is a person’s crowning glory?”

Well, this saying is true (not just for me but for other people as well). Our hair makes us complete. It helps boost our confidence and feel good if our hair is healthy and nice to look at.

For girls, the hair is very important in many aspects. Almost all girls spend time and excert effort in making thier hair presentable or just simply neat and healthy. Who wouldn’t want their hair to be appealing and very nice to look at?

So, if you want to have beautiful and healthy hair, you must work hard in order to achieve it and maintain it. But you don’t need to work too hard though. You just need to have discipline and right diet to keep your hair long and beautiful.

images (5)

Here are some tips that I recommend in order to maintain healthy and beautiful hair:

1. Eat healthy foods.

In order to maintain healthy hair, you must eat the right type of food. Eating healthy foods doesn’t just make your hair healthy but can also make your whole body healthy and fit.

You need lots of keratin producing foods in your diet to get long and healthy hair. Keratin is a protein that makes up the hair and nails.

Vitamin C is a building block for keratin so, citrus fruits peppers, chillies and brussel sprouts-fruits high in Vitamin C-can increase the development of keratin. Biotin plays a role in metabolizing proteins, so it supports keratin production. Eat biotin-rich vegetables like cauliflower, kale, broccoli and onions to improve the properties of keratin in the body. Beta-carotene rich foods also count when improving hair. Carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes and yams, mangoes, pumpkin, and apricots are all good sources of beta carotene. Whole grains are also good food sources that can support the generation of keratin. 2. Drink lots of water.

Water is essential in keeping your hair and whole body healthy. Water keeps the body hydrated thus, also keeping the hair hydrated and less prone to dryness.

images (1)

3. Choose the right kind of products that suits your type of hair.

If you have oily hair, use products that treat oily hair. If you have dry hair use products that moisturizes your hair to give it a shinier look. If you have frizzy hair, use products that can lessen the frizz and so on.
You don’t need to use too much products though, just a simple shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair best can do the trick.

images (10)

4. Use a wide-toothed comb.

In combing your hair when it’s still wet and even when it’s dry already, I suggest you use a wide-toothed comb instead of a narrow one or a brush to have less hair fall. Start combing your hair from the bottom, moving up towards the roots to avoid split ends. Combing your hair daily can also help in making it longer.

images (3)

5. Avoid too much heat.

Too much heat can make your hair prone to damage, brittleness and dryness so, if you don’t want your hair to be damaged, avoid using flat irons and blow dryers too much.

no-heat-tools-combs-or-brushes

6. Avoid too much sun exposure.

Too much exposure to the sun can make your hair dry and frizzy. It can also cause skin problems so, I suggest you bring an umbrella whenever you go out on a hot and sunny day or use hair protection products to keep your hair moisturized and healthy.

images (8)

7. Be healthy.

You need to be healthy to have healthy hair. Eat the right kind of foods, get the required amount of sleep everyday, exercise daily or atleast thrice a week, don’t over think too much and try to be stress free.
